Weta Workshop’s First Board Game, GKR: Heavy Hitters, Comes to Kickstarter

Do you like giant robots? How about giant robots fighting each other? Of course you do! I mean, the Transformers movies haven’t generated a bajillion dollars for their deep plot and character development. From Real Steel to Pacific Rim to even Voltron, people love them some giant robotic combat.

This week, I was caught off guard by a new tabletop Kickstarter campaign from none other than WetaWorkshop. That’s right, that Weta Workshop, the New Zealand special effects house that worked on tons of movies including Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy.

GKR: Heavy Hitters launched onto Kickstarter on Tuesday and made its $100,000 funding goal in about 4.5 hours. And with one look at the components, it’s not hard to see why. The game is set in a dystopian future where players control giant mechs that not only battle with each other, but destroy the landscape around them. Players will be building their squad, destroying competing robots, tagging buildings, and even controlling support drones.

While the theme isn’t not exactly ground breaking, what does look amazing are the game’s components. Not since 2016’s Mechs vs Minions has a board game looked this fantastic.

GKR: Heavy Hitters comes with absolutely fantastic looking miniatures, including pre-painted ones (with the option of getting them unpainted for those who like to paint minis themselves). In addition to the robotic miniatures, the game also features 3d skyscrapers for your robots to battle over, and piles of cards, dice and tokens.

While GKR: Heavy Hitters isn’t cheap, with pledges starting at $99 plus shipping (and they’ve already said shipping won’t be cheap due to the game’s weight), I feel like the components in this one will more than make up for its hefty price tag.

If you’d like to get in on the action, head over to Kickstarter today and check it out.
